The most common residential roofing material is Asphalt Composition Shingles. Asphalt Composition Shingles are made with asphalt and covered with ceramic coated granules (crushed rock). Different colors of granules are combined to achieve a rich shingle color.
Most Asphalt Composition Shingles last 16-20 years and are available in the following variations listed in order of price, least to greatest:
- Three Tab (3-Tab) is the least expensive asphalt composition shingle.

- Architectural laminate has a second layer or pieces added for definition. Generally, Architectural shingles are more durable than 3-Tab shingles because they are thicker with the addition of a second layer.

- Designer shingles are achieved through thickness, shape, and placement of multiple layers and pieces. Designer shingles are a fantastic feature for any home.
