Sadly, there are a lot of contractors who will get a liability insurance policy then never pay for it, BUT they have the paperwork so homeowners think they are covered.  If a worker from an uninsured crew falls off the roof or gets hurt, they can sue the homeowner for damages.  There are too many horror stories about bad contractors for any homeowner to take a chance on a fly by night organization.  Do your due diligence and check them out and ask a lot of questions! If a contractor cannot give insurance documentation or is reluctant to provide information, that is a BIG red flag and it is time to call Academy Roofing!

The most common residential roofing material is Asphalt Composition Shingles.  Asphalt Composition Shingles are made with asphalt and covered with ceramic coated granules (crushed rock).   Different colors of granules are combined to achieve a rich shingle color.  

Most Asphalt Composition Shingles last 16-20 years and are available in the following variations listed in order of price, least to greatest:

• Three Tab (3-Tab) is the least expensive asphalt composition shingle.

Standard 3-Tab Shingle

• Architectural laminate has a second layer or pieces added for definition.  Generally, Architectural shingles are more durable than 3-Tab shingles because they are thicker with the addition of a second layer.

• Designer shingles are achieved through thickness, shape, and placement of multiple layers and pieces.  Designer shingles are a fantastic feature for any home.

Hiring a Roof Contractor If you determine that you will need some roof work done, take the time to evaluate the roofing contractor who may be doing the job. The following guidelines will help in you choose a qualified, experienced roofer: - Check for a permanent place of business, telephone number, tax I.D. number, and a business license where your located.  - Insist on seeing copies of the contractor's liability insurance coverage and workers' compensation certificates. Make sure the coverage is in effect through the duration of the job by contacting the insurance carrier yourself. - Look for a company with a proven track record that readily offers client references and a list of completed projects. Call these clients to find out whether they were satisfied.  - Insist on a written proposal and examine it for complete descriptions of the work and specifications, including approximate starting and completion dates and payment procedures. Be careful of signing an estimate, by signing some you are committing to a contract. - Have the contractor explain his or her project supervision and quality control procedures. Request the name of the person who will be in charge, how many workers will be required and the estimated completion time.  - Carefully read and understand any roofing warranty offered and watch for provisions that would void it. The lowest bid is not always the best option. Remember, price is only one criterion for selecting a roofing contractor.
